Campus Active Directory Services at UVM

Documentation, information, discussions, and announcements concerning UVM's Active Directory based File Sharing, Printer Sharing and other Windows Server platform based services.

Getting Started

The steps required to get started with UVM Active Directory services depend on the services you wish to utilize: 

Do you want to become a container administrator?  Container administrators gain the following benefits:

  • Integration of departmental servers with the Active Directory user database
  • Availability of central security settings, certificate services, DNS and WINS services, and minimal Group Policy settings

Do you want to take advantage of the UVM Windows Services?  Windows services includer:

  • Home directories with three Gigabytes of storage per person (Windows, Mac, Linux)
  • "My Documents" file synchronization (Windows only), up to three Gigabytes of storage, applied against your Home directory storage quota
  • Departmental file sharing/collaboration with variable storage quotas per office (Windows, Mac, Linux)
  • Routing of print jobs to networked printers: includes automatic driver distribution and printer advertising (Windows, Mac, possibly Linux)
  • Off-campus file access using standard web protocols (HTTP and WebDAV), or VPN connections (Windows, Mac via "Goliath" client, Linux)

To become a container administrator::

  1. Familarize yourself with:
    - Active Directory Policies including:
    - UVM Active Directory Naming Standards,
    - Frequently Asked Questions,
    - UVM Active Directory design documents.

  2. Schedule a meeting with the UVM Active Directory project team by using sending mail to us. The UVM Active Directory team will discuss your requirements with you.  You will be required to:
    • Agree to the UVM Active Directory policies.  Use of Active Directory Services implies agreement with our listed policies!!!
    • Provide the UVM Active Directory project team with the name and email address of your local administrator(s) that can be added to the UVM Active Directory Administrative Contact List.
    • Provide the UVM Active Directory project team with the UVM NetID of the first administrator for the new OU.
    • Agree to participate in the UVM Active Directory Design Group, or waive that right to appeal changes in official Active Directory Policies.

To sign on for Windows Services:

  1. Familiarize yourself with:
    - Windows Services Policies
    - Frequently Asked Questions
  2. Schedule a meeting with the UVM Active Directory project team by sending mail to us: gregory.mackinnon@uvm.edu, Geoffrey.Duke@uvm.edu, and Philip.Plourde@uvm.edu.  The UVM Active Directory team will discuss your requirements with you and develop a timeline for joining your department to the directory.  You will be required to:

    • Agree to the UVM Active Directory policies.  Use of Windows Services implies your consent to these policies!!!
    • Provide the UVM Active Directory project team with the name and email address of local IT contact that can be added to the UVM Active Directory Administrative Contact List.
    • Provide the UVM Active Directory project team with a new local IT contact if your current contact leaves the department.
