ArcGIS Desktop 9.0 and later supports silent installation switches.  Our local ArcGIS license administrator tells us that our default installtion should include ArcGIS Desktop, with the latest service packs, "Professional" installation option, and should use the license server "arclm.uvm.edu".

Here is how we do that:
  1. Copy the contents of the ESRI ArcGIS DVD "\Desktop" directory to the staging directory
  2. Open a command prompt, and CD to the new "Desktop" directory
  3. Create an administrative installation point from the "setup.msi" file:
    msiexec /a setup.msi ADDLOCAL=ALL SOFTWARE_CLASS=Professional
    (You
will be prompted to specify an installation directory.  This will become the "administrative installation point".)
  4. Copy the latest patches (MSP files) to the administative installation point.  Last time, we obtained the patches from:
    http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=downloads.patchesServicePacks.viewPatch&PID=43&MetaID=1351
  5. Now, "CD" to the administrative installation point, and integrate the patch files using the "/p" switch for msiexec, as seen in the following example:
    msiexec /a setup.msi /p ArcGISDesktop92sp4.msp;ArcGISDesktopHelp92sp4.msp
(NOTE that you can integrate multiple patches with one command)
  6. Remove the patch files from the administative installation point
  7. Use 7Zip to create a self-extracting installer that runs the following command:
    msiexec /i setup.msi /qb ADDLOCAL=ALL SOFTWARE_CLASS=Professional ESRI_LICENSE_HOST=arclm.uvm.edu
NOTE:  Placing the admin install point inside a self-extracting installer results in an install that cannot be removed.  For this reason we may need to revert to a "traditional" network install.
